TACTICS OF SURVIVING A FIRST DAY AT WORK

We all want to kick of a first day at work on the right foot, but the fact we are just humans therefore not perfect.

A first day at work, all fears start bubbling up and a thousand and one questions run in your mind, what if no one will like me? What if am not the right candidate for the job? This may feel like a first day in school.

All those mixed up feelings are normal, find your comfort in the fact that we have all been there at some point in life.

Despite that there are at least things you can do to help you survive that first day:

  • Pick out your outfit

Take time the day before to pick out what outfit you’re going to put on your big day, remember if you look good, you feel good.

This is important because sometimes the way we dress can turn people off to approaching us, or it sends the wrong message. Ideally, you want to blend in and make others and yourself comfortable.

  • Show up early

To avoid added stress on that day, get to your new work place at least 15 minutes earlier to get to familiarize with the place before even your workmates can show up.

  • Listen and take notes

The best thing anyone can do in the first few days of a new job is listen,

You're likely going to be bombarded with quite a lot of information. Write down as much as possible so you can review it again later. It's also a good idea to arrive with your own notebook and pen.

  • Talk to workmates

One of the most invaluable insights you can get early on is how the department operates from the perspective of your workmates. If you establish that you're friendly and approachable early on, you will start on the right foot in establishing trust.

  • Patience in introduction

Do not get tired of introducing yourself. Practice answering the same questions over and over. This way you do not give the impression that you are growing tired of it.

  • Ask questions

Asking questions not only shows that you're interested, it's also a really great way to learn about the inner workings of the company. If you're given a task to complete, but you're not confident that you quite understand all the requirements, speak up. It's better to ask and get clarity than to end up doing the wrong thing.

  • Don't take things too personally

You'll likely come across a few people who won't be too enthusiastic about helping you out. Don't take it too personally though, they're probably just really busy and as time goes by you'll get to know everyone a lot better

Finally, it may have taken awhile to reach this point, after searching, interviewing, and landing the job, so don't forget to be happy and enjoy the moment. We all know that first impressions matter.

Smile when you meet new people, and shake their hands. Introduce yourself to everyone, and make it clear how happy and eager you are to be there.
