Why you need a CV expert to review your CV before applying for jobs? I once cried.

Five years ago I remember applying several jobs in sequence with no replies.I did this for six good months.I finally gave up and started calling my friends and relatives for any job opportunities they will come across.

I started saying I can do any job I will find. One morning I got a call from my uncle asking me to attend an interview in a busy city business park.He wasn't sure about the exact descriptions of the job since it was a referral from a friend.

I woke up that Monday morning anxious to attend the job interview.I actually reached there by 8am, I only had the directions to the office with no name ..think 3rd floor, office 10.something like that.

Boom! I was at their reception ....read some posters and realized it was an insurance company .A few minutes later the receptionist smiled and directed me to the interview room. The interview started and imagined these panelists ask me questions like..can you sell something ? I was like mmmh ...One of them said "mmmh sell this pen to us and convince us".I tried my best selling to them their own pen...They said not bad, you can do it.

They went on and on with series of questions and ended the interview with the word "You can start work tomorrow and your pay is on commission basis..don't worry you will be trained".

My heart skipped a bit,how on earth can I sell this insurance thing I know little about and get paid on commission.

I went home and cried that day.I was frustrated, I was desperate.and before I slept I went online ,searched for career guide experts in Kenya.I found one website with contacts displayed,I texted the number and fortunately found their reply in the morning giving me a lunch hour appointment at their offices.

I woke up fresh and ready to visit their offices and actually by 12 noon I had arrived and received. One of their staff took me to a round table room where I joined a young man who looked like an expert in something.

We were left the two of us and the consultation started. He had a series of questions which I answered desperately.I narrated my disappointing stories of many job applications with no replies.

He asked for my CV whichI opened it on my email. He was shocked.

He actually said ,"how on earth can this CV design give you a job?"

I asked whats wrong with it?

He gave me five reasons why my CV was ignored;

1. Poor design

He told me a poor design puts off the employer from looking at your CV.

2. Wrong order of titles

When the order of titles is upside down you miss out since the most important things to the employer are not appearing on the first two pages.

3. Wrong Fonts

using the wrong fonts makes your CV to look crowded.

4. Poor Narration of skills

When the major skills are not narrated well, your bargaining power is gone.

5. Crowded words.

An employer is a busy person with so many CV's to look at, therefore a crowded CV is not worth his/her time.

He actually had to rewrite all my CV at a fee...I later used the CV only twice and got a successful interview.Belief me it works.

I learnt that not until you ask the expert you will never know you doing something wrong.

He trained me on how to write a perfect CV and since that day I have been rewriting so many CV's for graduates and the working class.
